How We Choose Our Wedding Dessert
I don’t know where the rumor came from that wedding cake is dry and boring, but I eat cake at most weddings I photograph (job perks) and ALL weddings I attend as a guest and I beg to differ. Also-- you don’t have to have cake at all! I've seen all kinds of desserts: pie, ice cream, sticky buns, candy.
But I'm a cake person so... Our search for cake started on Instagram. Yep, I’m that person who follows bakeries on Instagram. And I’m going to recommend that you check out the companies you’re interested in hiring there too because that’s where you can find a lot of their recent work.
The thing that caught my eye about Indie Cakes’ Instagram feed is that in addition to posting behind the scenes, cakes and cupcakes, she posted a pictures of the full dessert table setup at a wedding. So not only was I drooling over the food, but I could see how she set up a cake plus cupcakes or brownies or whatever combination of dessert.
As you start planning your wedding you’ll realize you have to consider EACH and EVERY thing and how it will come together. If you want to save a bit of money, you can hire a baker who will simply deliver the baked goods to your reception venue. You can then have someone (hired or not) set up the table.
However, in the mindset of having the least moving parts possible, I wanted to hire a baker who would set up the table as well. And after following Indie Cakes on instagram I knew she would do a beautiful job setting up our small cutting cake and cupcakes. Next up, a tasting!
This was a most enjoyable consultation! Stephen and I shoving cupcakes down while Anastasia explained to us how things worked. She gave us an estimate and we walked about ten steps out the door before deciding to go back and book her on the spot.
We appreciated that we could book without having our flavors nailed down and without being sure if we wanted to add on some other bite sized goodies for the dessert table. There are so many decisions you have to make, it was nice to be able to make progress without having to make a decision at that moment.
Unfortunately, Indie Cakes is not long doing weddings. WAHHH. But! Here are some other bakery and dessert companies I recommend:
Pretty Please (SF)
Garden Creamery (Food Truck-They’re all over! p.s. their fresh mint chip ice cream is ridiculous)
Curbside Creamery (Oakland-- ice cream and ice cream sandwiches)
Susie Cakes (SF)
