Today I have something a little different to share with you all! I've been stewing on a personal project documenting creatives who make things and I've finally gotten started. My first session was with Amanda of Amanda Vidmar Design who is a fantastic florist!
I've decided to share sessions with creatives and business owners who serve the wedding industry so that I might give you all an inside look at what we do and the why behind it all. I asked Amanda to answer a few questions so I could sprinkle in her own words to accompany the images. I hope you enjoy this inside look of Amanda at work!
Tell me a bit about yourself and your business
I'm a Southern California native, but fell in love with the Central Coast & Northern California when I attended school in Santa Cruz. Strangely enough, I was an Economics major, but fell in love with flowers when I started working for Thomas Farm Organic after I graduated. My roots are forever with the farm. I fell head-over-heels in love with flowers the first time I opened the back of the truck to find 80 buckets of ranunculus, and haven't been able to stop since then!
My company started in 2013 as a way to share my love for the natural world with the San Francisco Bay Area. It is a floral and event design company, which not only hones in on flowers, but the entire design vision of a wedding or event.
Why did you decide to start your business?
I knew I had to put my fancy economics degree into use! Essentially, I wanted to share my love for flowers with my clients. I wanted Amanda Vidmar Design to make the floral design process fun and exciting for couples, and to share my love for design to incorporate into a really special day for someone.
What's your favorite thing about your business?
That my clients make my day, just as much as I make their wedding day special. It's a wonderful thing.
How would you describe your style?
Wild, yet intentional. My designs take forever and a day, because I'm constantly tweaking the arrangement to make sure it's just perfect! Each arrangement is a little piece of my heart.
What makes you different from other florists?
I grow a lot of flowers myself, taking back to my roots with Thomas Farm. It allows me to grow varieties and colors that aren't typically seen at weddings. I like to make sure that each arrangement has an interesting element to it.
What tips or advice would you give to couples looking for a florist or trying to figure out what style they like best?
I always like to ask my clients what kind of flowers they'd like in their dream home! It's a pretty tell-all, since weddings and events really are a reflection of the client, making their dream a reality, even if it is just for one evening!
When do you feel like you're doing your best work?
I love when it's a collaboration between what the client and myself, and when we both trust each other wholeheartedly.
Thank you again Amanda for being a part of my project! I had a great time watching you work and seeing how you get everything to come together in your arrangements.
